It was an experiment. We were NOT going to add a checked bag or priority status to our ticket. Ryanair’s new carry on policy  is challenging for the budget traveler hoping only to move about with a single bag because now that bag must exist within these dimensions:
45cm (15 inches)x20cm (~8 inches)x25cm (~10 inches)

We had three people on our tickets, 2 adults and 1 toddler. 3 nights and 3 full days for our weekend. 2 plane rides. Here’s what Cody and I learned from the experience:

Tip 1 – We repeated outfits (a.k.a. no mixing, just washed stuff in the sink and let it dry while we wore the other outfit)
Tip 2 – Unlike in previous minimal packing lists, I chose fun outfits whose items didn’t mix. My rational was if I was going to wear the same clothes over and over, I wanted them to at least make me happy when I put them on instead of bored. I was extremely pleased with this choice.
Tip 3 – We shared packing cubes (2 minis holding three people’s wardrobes) so stuff was packed the most efficiently possible
Tip 4 – thin wool layers whenever possible.
Tip 5 – thin layers no matter the material whenever possible

With all the food and baby toys, book, and a decent amount of diapers/wipes, these were the contents of our two bags:

The Ryanair infant lap ticket actually allows us to carry a diaper bag no more than 5kg (11lbs) + a stroller. After thinking it over, we relented and added a tote because finding the right size diapers/absorbency would have been a pain. Total we ended up taking 25 diapers and extra wipes. We also included the very lightweight and compact Boba Air carrier so we could haul the kid around without need of the stroller on some afternoons and it fit in the tote when folded up.

The result of our experiment?
Had it just been the two of us, Cody and I could do this small bag challenge EASY and have room for at least one more top and/or outfit a piece. But since we had the toddler and all his supplies to worry about, we knew there was a challenge ahead. We triple checked that everything would be ok, from the Ryanair website to asking the flight attendant before boarding to (“Oh, definitely ok,” she assured us on our three items) and only felt 100% confident of our packing plan after doing it, thus why I wanted to share about it here in a post.

Each day it was an easy decision on what to wear, and the wool clothing dried super fast overnight. Moving to a new hotel or packing to go home was fast and simple. Because most of our time was spent outdoors in the winter cold, it’s not like we had a ton of pictures with the repeat outfits taking the spotlight anyway, just our winter coats. I can see doing this again with zero hesitancy on a longer trip, but new outfits next time to keep it fun.

And if it’s just you traveling solo, or just two adults traveling with two pieces of hand luggage, remember you’ll easily fit another outfit in to the same bags/dimensions we had as long as your layers are thin so your vacation pics don’t have to seem so spartan.
